When was the battery invented?

17 February, 2010 by Isidor Buchmann, Cadex Electronics | Supplied by: Cadex Electronics Inc

One of the most remarkable and novel discoveries in the last 400 years has been electricity. One may ask, “Has electricity been around that long?” The answer is yes, and perhaps much longer, but the practical use of electricity has only been at our disposal since the mid- to late-1800s and, at first, in a limited way.

North Atlantic iPM DSP-based intelligent power monitor & control unit

18 January, 2010 | Supplied by: Unitronix Pty Ltd

North Atlantic Industries (NAI) has released a next-generation, DSP-based intelligent power monitor and control unit. The model iPM monitors single- or 3-phase wye or delta connected power lines for voltage, frequency, phase sequence, THD and DC component. When any of these parameters are outside of their preprogrammed limits, the iPM internal 10 A relay opens and disconnects the power from the load. The device has a universal input voltage range of 80 to 230 RMS and a universal input frequency range of 47 to 800 Hz. It includes a background self-test capability that constantly monitors the health of the unit.

Accurate power supplies using integrated voltage regulators

03 December, 2009 by Len Stellema, Leonard Electronics Pty Ltd

The introduction of integrated voltage regulators was a boon for electronic engineers. Before that, regulated power supplies were rather complex, particularly if such a power supply had to be short-circuit proof.
