Integrated GPS receiver and antenna

The WS5012 GPS receiver and antenna, from Canadian antenna manufacturer Wi-Sys Communications, incorporates a high-sensitivity GPS receiver and a high-performance active/filtered GPS antenna into the a weatherproof industrial-grade enclosure.

It has embedded flash memory, a low noise amplifier, a SAW filter, as well as a tuned ceramic patch element for maximum GPS signal reception. It is available with USB, CMOS and RS232 interfaces and outputs standard NMEA 0183 messages.

At 40 x 40 mm, the GPS receiver and antenna is not much larger than a standard antenna and is housed in a compact, rugged weatherproof (IP67) magnet or screw mount enclosure. The GPS tracks to -159 dB, claims a 2 m accuracy with a 2.5 s hot start and 39 s cold start acquisition.

The WS5012-E is an embedded version of the receiver and antenna in a 25.76 mm square form factor with a 10 cm cable. It is 3.3 V , draws a low current of 80 mA (typ) and has low power and standby modes. There is a CMOS version WS5012-E-T that outputs a 1 Hz PPS to 50 n/s.

The device suits many applications but automotive navigation; fleet management; military, security and public safety; high-performance GPS tracking; WiMAX; and wireless timing/synchronisation are especially suitable. The embedded WS5012-E has applications in portable navigation products and the embedded WS5012-E-T has applications for timing.
