RF Micro Devices has introduced the next generation of its PowerStar power amplifier module portfolio.
The two modules are 30% smaller than previous modules.
The modules include: the quad-band RF3158 (GSM/GPRS/EDGE), optimised for linear EDGE using either direct I&Q modulators or small signal polar modulation; the quad-band RF3166 (GSM/GPRS), optimised for GSM/GPRS class 12.
The devices also feature integrated battery voltage tracking circuitry, claimed to be a first for standard PA module products. Battery voltage monitoring automatically measures battery voltage and adjusts ramp voltage, preventing the power control loop from reaching saturation during low voltage battery conditions.
Tracking circuitry also reduces transients, which occur at low battery voltage conditions and can reduce efficiency.
The devices feature power and current flatness over all four bands for optimisation and tuning, which provides good current consumption.
