Tertiary photonics courses
The possibility of an industry based on photonics has prompted several universities to offer courses on the subject.
The Australian National University will offer two new degrees next year: a three-year Bachelor of Photonics (with the option of proceeding to a Bachelor of Science Honours degree) and a four-year Bachelor of Engineering (Photonic Systems).
"Australia already is a major player in the photonics industry," ANU Physics Department head, David McClelland, said. The University of Newcastle offered a Bachelor of Science (Photonics) for the first time this year, and Macquarie University already offers a Bachelor of Optoelectronics. A 1999 survey of 12 communications companies shows that at least 700 graduates will be required in the Australian photonics industry by 2006.
