Power assist system
Tuesday, 06 August, 2002
UQM technologies electric motor/generator and electronic inverter are powering a power assist parallel hybrid electric system developed by Electromotive, Virginia.
The motor/generator is controlled to output power under certain conditions to assist the internal combustion engine at its most inefficient operating points.
While operating in motor mode, the machine provides 'load leveling' to the internal combustion engine which is claimed to improve performance and lower fuel consumption and emissions.
The system's computer controls both internal combustion engine and the motor by monitoring engine and battery charging functions and directing operating characteristics. As a result, power is generated and stored in the battery pack during vehicle deceleration and idle, or any time the engine produces excess power.
