In-Stat/MDR has announced the results of its Networking Quarterlies: Multiservice WAN Switches report for the fourth quarter of 2001 (4Q 01).

The research firm showed that cautious service provider capital spending impacted several equipment markets including multiservice switches and packet telephony gateways. Most service providers are being very conservative in their purchases, only adding capacity where needed for growth in traffic, but not building new networks.

Multiservice WAN switch sales decreased again, continuing the decline witnessed in the previous three quarters of 2001. Total worldwide multiservice switch manufacturer sales revenues were $1660 million, 44% below the level of 4Q 00. Multiservice switch sales are expected to decline somewhat further in the first half of 2002, as service providers restrain spending under tighter budgets.
