The NaioSTM, by Nanosurf, is a scanning tunnelling microscope that offers easy entry into the world of atoms. It brings together scan head and controller in a single instrument for simple installation, ease of use and straightforward transportability. The set-up is robust against vibrations and can be used to achieve atomic resolution on HOPG in standard classroom situations.

Suitable applications include chemistry, coating, materials science, microstructures, physics and semiconductors. The smart and purposeful design is particularly suited to the needs of educational institutions: the system integrates scan head, controller and airflow shielding with a magnifying glass to aid the initial approach, and vibration isolation on a heavy stone table.

The small mechanical loop of <10 mm provides the stability to achieve atomic resolution on a coffee table, in a lab or in a classroom. The instrument has a small footprint that hardly takes up any workbench space, measuring 204 x 204 x 104 mm and weighing just 3.45 kg.

The device can achieve a max scan range (XYZ) of 500 x 500 x 200 nm and scan resolution (XYZ) of 7.6 x 7.6 x 3.1 pm. The passive vibration isolation feet protect measurements against disturbances, making the system robust during operation. The system functions also without high voltage, making it safe in unexperienced hands. It can achieve atomic resolution in minutes: just connect USB and power.
