Bendable screens

Monday, 04 November, 2002

It has been reported that DuPont, Sarnoff and Lucent technologies will work together to develop a display technology that could lead to thin, flexible monitors that can be wrapped around curved surfaces or rolled up and put away or carried. The project is to be sponsored by the Advanced Technology Program at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

The flexible displays will use polymer-based organic light-emitting diode (OLED). Displays using OLED technology do not require a backlight, so they are expected to consume less power and be thinner than LCDs.

It has been estimated the development will take approximately 10 years before they could potentially take on the LCD flat panel monitor market .
