Microsemi has released what it claims is the world’s first 60 W, single-port power-over-ethernet (PoE) midspan with gigabit switching support, efficient four-pair operation and full compliance with the IEEE 802.3at draft 4.1 high-power PoE specifications.
PowerDsine PD-9501G may be used with a wide range of PoE powered devices including 802.11n access points, WiMAX CPE and base stations, pan-tilt-zoom cameras and thin clients that require high power and support of two-event classification as specified in the latest IEEE 802.3at specifications.
Key features include: 802.3at draft 4.1 compliant, delivers up to 60 W on four-pairs; 2-event classification; 10/100/1000Base-T support; interlock mechanism.
A key feature is its ability to deliver power over all four pairs of ethernet cable that improves performance and efficiency.
Four-pair powering enables the device to maintain a 600 mA current level wile delivering 60 W. As a result, the device makes 51 W available for PD consumption using a Cat5 cable, compared with 42 W for two-pair solutions.
In addition to its 60 W operating mode, the device may also be used to power two-pair devices with up to 30 W. In this case, the midspan still uses all four pairs of Cat5-and-above cable, which enables it to dissipate up to 50% less power on the cable.
A PoE system using the midspan will consume almost 15% less energy than a conventional two-pair solution.
The unit also includes an interlocking feature that allows users to scale their deployments by incrementally linking together multiple one-port midspan units as new PDs are added to the network.
