The number of H-bridge motor drivers used in the electronic throttles and various valves of automobiles is on the rise, stimulating demand for system miniaturisation. In addition, On-Board Diagnostic II (OBDII) will become mandatory in 2022, requiring automotive motor driver ICs to have SPI communication functions. With this in mind, Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage has launched two brushed DC motor driver ICs — TB9054FTG in a wettable flank VQFN package and TB9053FTG in a power QFN package — for use in automotive applications, including electronic throttles.

The ICs feature 5 A, 2-channel output drivers that help to reduce mounting area. A 10 A, 1-channel drive in parallel mode is also possible. They can be daisy-chained and also have functions that control motors only by SPI communication, both of which reduce MCU ports.

Housed in 6 x 6 mm small QFN packages, the motor drivers should contribute to the system miniaturisation that the market demands. They are suitable for automotive applications such as throttle valves, various engine valves, retractable door mirrors and body systems, including electric door latches.
