MAX8720 step-down controller

Monday, 15 November, 2004 | Supplied by: Arrow Electronics Australia Pty Ltd

Maxim has introduced the MAX8720 step-down controller, featuring dynamically adjustable output, ultra-fast transient response, high DC accuracy and the high efficiency required for CPU-core power supplies.

Maxim's Quick-PWM, constant on-time, pulse-width modulation control scheme handles wide-input/output voltage ratios.

The control scheme also provides 100 ns 'instant-on' response to load transients, while maintaining a constant switching frequency.

The 8720's output voltage is dynamically adjusted through the 6 bit DAC over a 0.275 to 1.850 V range in 25 mV steps. Independent, four-level logic inputs set the suspend voltage.

The internal DAC is synchronised to the slew-rate clock for improved operation under the aggressive power management of newer chipsets and operating systems that can make incomplete mode transitions.
