Diodes has introduced a family of LED driver integrated circuits capable of reducing the number and size of external components required by drive circuits.

The AP880X series step-down DC-DC converters need the support of four components and, by operating at switching frequencies up to 600 kHz, enable the use of smaller and lower cost inductors and capacitors.

For an operating voltage range of 8 to 28, the AP8800 will furnish a string of seven LEDs with a current up to 350 mA, providing a match for 1 W LED systems.

For higher output power, the AP8801 will produce a drive current of 500 mA from an operating voltage of 8 to 48, to support up to 13 series connected LEDs.

The AP8802 will meet the requirements of higher power 3 W LED systems. For an operating voltage of 8 to 48, the driver will provide up to 13 LEDs with a constant LED current of up to 1 A. All three devices deliver efficiencies of up to 92%.

To reduce the stress on LEDs, the drivers have an integrated soft-start function. The drivers also offer the choice of PWM and DC input dimming control.
