Renesas completes its acquisition of Dialog Semiconductor

Semiconductor supplier Renesas Electronics and Dialog Semiconductor, a provider of battery and power management, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth low energy and industrial edge computing solutions, have announced Renesas’s acquisition of the entire issued and to-be-issued share capital of Dialog.

With the transaction now closed, Dialog becomes a wholly owned subsidiary of Renesas. About 2300 Dialog employees have joined Renesas Group, and the two companies will work together to integrate both businesses.

“Today represents an important milestone for Renesas,” said President and CEO Hidetoshi Shibata. “This transaction builds on our long-term strategy to offer a complete set of solutions with more leading-edge analog and mixed signal products that deliver value and innovation to the customers.

“We are excited to welcome the talented team of Dialog employees, as well as the customers and suppliers of Dialog to the Renesas community. The combination augments engineering scale and delivers a diversified product portfolio across multiple, attractive end markets. Together, we are positioned to capitalise on an array of growing opportunities including the IoT, industrial and automotive fields.”

The deal with Dialog follows Renesas’s acquisitions of Intersil in 2017 and Integrated Device Technology in 2019, reinforcing the company as a premier embedded solution provider. Renesas will now expand its market presence with an even broader product portfolio range by combining Dialog’s low-power mixed signal products, low-power Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity expertise, flash memory, battery and power management as well as its experience and in-depth knowledge in providing configurable mixed-signal (CMIC) solutions and more. The acquisition will also enable Renesas to further extend its go-to-market initiatives and provide seamless and borderless services to customers across the globe.

Renesas has also announced several changes in its executive officers and reassignment of automotive solution business functions effective 1 October 2021, to take advantage of the synergies resulting from the combination of Renesas and Dialog’s strengths. Vivek Bhan has joined Renesas’s leadership team as Senior Vice President, having previously served as Dialog’s Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Custom Mixed Signal (CMS) Business Group. He will continue to be responsible for the CMS business as a member of Renesas’s IoT and Infrastructure Business Unit.

Tomomitsu Maoka is meanwhile retiring as Renesas’s Senior Vice President, Deputy General Manager of Automotive Solution Business Unit as of 30 September 2021. Following Maoka’s retirement, Bhan will assume the new role of Senior Vice President & Deputy General Manager of Automotive Solution Business Unit effective 1 October. Bhan and Maoka will work together during September to ensure a smooth transition.
