The 14th annual Create the Future Design Contest is now open. Mouser Electronics is once again sponsoring the contest, which challenges engineers and students around the world to create an innovative product idea that benefits society and the economy.

The winning entry will receive a cash prize of US$20,000. Launched in 2002 by the publishers of NASA Tech Briefs magazine, the annual event has produced more than 12,000 design ideas from engineers, entrepreneurs and students in more than 100 countries. Entries close on 1 July 2016.

The design contest brings attention to product designs that enhance quality of life, improve the efficiency and quality of health care and help to reduce dependence on non-renewable energy sources. Previous prize-winning entries include an economical, rapid screening device to prevent foodborne illness; a wheelchair propulsion system designed to increase the user’s mobility while decreasing upper-body repetitive strain injuries; and a mechanism that makes CPR easy and safe for anyone to perform.

“Advancing innovation with the newest technologies is part of our mission here at Mouser, and we are very excited to help foster innovation by sponsoring this global design contest for engineers and students,” said Kevin Hess, Mouser Electronics senior vice president of marketing.

“Mouser is known worldwide for its introduction of the newest products and technologies and for providing unparalleled service for its customers,” said Joseph Pramberger, president of Tech Briefs Media Group. “We are thrilled for the opportunity to have Mouser support this contest for the third consecutive year, along with their manufacturer partners Analog Devices and Intel; they are committed to serving engineers and their design needs.”

The grand prize winner will be chosen from the winners in seven entry categories, including:

  • Aerospace & Defense
  • Automotive/Transportation
  • Consumer Products
  • Electronics
  • Machinery/Automation/Robotics
